Hey Foxy Lady

Hey Foxy Lady

In case you didn’t know I’m a little obsessed with Wes Anderson films. Since I can’t live in one I decided to dress like I’m in one.

Who wouldn’t want to channel the Brains behind the Brains Felicity Fox? I wasn’t sure how much luck I’d have finding something in the exact colouring of Felicity’s golden yellow dress. And no surprise the picking were slim at the thrift store. The only thing with promise was this jacket with some pretty intense shoulder pads.

So I took a risk and bought it. It was $7.99 so what was the worst that could happen. The first thing I did was wash it (duh) and then took out these shoulder pads. Cause somebody could rock it, but me with my tiny head just can’t.

Removing shoulder pads is a skill that goes hand in hand with thrifting. A right of passage. This jacket was easy to remove the shoulder pads from. In heavier coats, you sometimes need to cut through the lining to remove these monstrosities. This one only required seam ripping to remove the shoulder pad.

While looking through all my stuff to find one tiny little seam ripper I also found this tiny little sewing kit that matched the jacket. Wasted some time obsessing over this adorable coincidence. But it also came in handy to use these pins as markers.

To create the apple pattern I made an extremely fancy and professional stamp out of the lid of my dry shampoo and some layered foam sheets from the dollar store. Also didn’t have glue so I stuck the layers of foam together with nail polish.

To get an even coat of fabric paint onto the stamp spread it out with a knife to make a thin layer and dip the stamp in. Be careful to watch the edges don’t get clumpy by periodically wiping off excess paint.

The paint will leak through the layers of fabric unless you put a plastic bag in-between. Make sure it’s pushed all the way into the corners. I marked the middle of the jacket with a pin and started stamping.

About this time I realized I didn’t know how to measure out where to stamp and the thought of having to actually get out a measuring tape did my head in. Luckily my wine glass was the perfect tool to measure out the pattern.

I won’t lie to you there is a LOT of stamping to do. I stamped out all the red first and then hand painted on the green for the stems.

You may need to paint in sections depending on how slow the paint dries. Mine dried pretty quickly, which surprised me. So in no time, it was ready to wear.

I didn’t have the highest hopes for how this project would turn out but it surpassed my expectations! It’s a favourite piece now.

It even has little Felicity Fox pockets! I love it and can’t wait to wear it.
