Make Nine 2022 Recap

Make Nine 2022 Recap

Here we are, how has it been a whole year already? It feels like I made my Make Nine 2022 list yesterday but also ten years ago. The years do feel strange in these post-pandemic years. I’ve been really diligent in tracking and recording all the sewing projects I’ve made this past year. That means I have very detailed information on how I DID NOT finish my Make Nine 2022. I’m kinda annoyed because there are few things I love more than crossing everything off a list. However, it would be silly to beat myself up about this because life is ups and downs and sometimes you check everything off the list and sometimes you don’t.

I consider my Make Nine 2022 list a guideline, a point of inspiration, and a reason to spend hours scrolling through sewing hashtags on Instagram. Who knows an item or two might make their way onto my Make Nine 2023 list. We’ll see what happens.  Enough of that though, here is my recap!

1/9 Labellum Bra

Here is my issue, all the instructions I read on getting started with using an existing bra that fits really well to figure out what size underwire you need to buy. I have a changing body and weird boobs and none of my bras fit well enough I would want to spend hours re-creating them. SO I got really sad, hated my body, and decided to give this one a pass for the moment. I’d like to revisit at some point in the future because the bra racket is $$$$$.

2/9 Dream on Dress

This was snuck by on a technicality, I *did* make it but I hacked it to pieces so it doesn’t really resemble how the pattern is *supposed* to look… but I made two so that makes up for it. At least that is what I’ve decided.

This one was really special because I recreated Christmas dresses my little sister and I had when we were really small. It was fun to dress up together.

3/9 Heather Blazer

I am super bummed I didn’t get to this sewing project this year.  I’ve been wanting an oversized blazer in my wardrobe for a really long time. Perhaps this one will get moved along to the 2023 list. I tried making one blazer one time. The instructions were ‘pull your hair out’ infuriating. I think, in part, that is why I didn’t prioritize the Heather Blazer this year. But my past experience is not Heather’s fault and I think she deserves a chance.

4/9 Pona Jacket

So we’ve talked about all the things I didn’t sew this year now let’s talk about the Pona Jacket because I sewed the hell out of this pattern in 2022. I made…. five…

Can say for certain this pattern has the Hannah seal of approval. Totally open to making more in the future but perhaps I should take a small breather. Have to say my favourite of the five is this olive green/Khaki/Camel hack I made. It was so nice my sister wanted one in green corduroy for herself.

5/9 Agnes Top

I technically didn’t make this top. I was really excited about jersey tops when the year started but after that moment I lost all inspiration for them. As time went on it didn’t feel practical to buy a pattern I wasn’t psyched to make so I just hacked another pattern from this list: the Dream On Dress. I sliced and lengthened the bodice and modified the instructions to fit a top rather than a dress.

6/9 Dress 47

I sorta fell out of love with this pattern, maybe not entirely I just didn’t make it in time for summer and lost the ambition to make it. There are such lovely versions people have made online that I might revisit this pattern again.

7/9 Fleur Robe

Again, went pretty hard with the Fleur robe. I loved it so much one was just not enough. Initially, I made a silly version in a dark blue fabric I bought from the thrift store. It makes me feel like an ageing Hollywood starlet from the golden age who is just on the brink of insanity.. and I love it. Jokes aside it feels luxurious and makes my Saturday morning tea feel extra special.

This spring I really got into the cutesy/cottagecore vibe and an easy way to embrace that was to make a pink floral robe for myself! I really didn’t need a second one but how can you pass this up? I’ve been hoarding this fabric from my travels in Japan and waiting on the perfect project. I love being reminded of that trip every time I wear this robe.

8/9 Cottesloe Swimsuit

This first made the list back in 2021 and I never made it. BUT NOT THIS YEAR! THIS YEAR I VANQUISHED SWIMWEAR! (Psst. it’s really not as difficult as you think it should be) I already have fabric lined up to make another one! Taking pictures of me in my swimsuit really scared the life out of me.

I’m so glad I did because 1) every body is a beach body and your shape/size shouldn’t determine what you can wear. and 2) I felt great wearing this super loud swimsuit. That picture I was so afraid to post? Yeah, it ended up being my most-liked picture of 2022.

9/9 Elio Top

Honestly not sure why I didn’t get to this one. There is no satisfying or logical answer, I just didn’t.

Recap of the Recap

There you are! My Make Nine 2022 Recap. I love looking back to where my head was at the beginning of the year. I’m excited for all the sewing I’ll be doing in 2023 but it’s good to look back and learn.

Did you finish your Make Nine list? Do you have sewing plans for 2023? I’d love to hear about them!

Happy Sewing!
