Cold Brew Crew

As two former baristas, we get a bit nerdy about coffee. So gear up for some learning and caffeine. Cause we are making Cold Brew Coffee!

There is no way around it this summer is hot! with random days that are cloudy and rain pours down. Because this is Vancouver and that is how we roll. So when we have nice days they must be capitalized on!

Here is a little break down on Cold Brew vs Ice Coffee. Ice coffee is brewed hot and then cold water or ice is added. Cold Brew, on the other hand, is brewed in cold water for a long time. The benefit of Cold Brew is that the brewing method decreases the acidity by around 60%. This means you end up with a sweeter coffee that isn’t as harsh on your stomach. If coffee tends to irritate your insides a little bit give Cold Brew a try. It’s also not going to go stale and gross as fast as hot coffee so make up a big batch!

We knew this was something we would want to make again and again, high hopes July is going to be sunny and gorgeous, so we figured we would make a sustainable and reusable option for brewing.

What you’ll need:

  • Unbleached Muslin
  • Thread
  • Sewing Machine ( you can hand stitch if you like)
  • 1L jar with lid
  • Kitchen String
  • Iron
  • Coffee

We eyeball measured out jars to figure out what size to make muslin drawstring bags that would serve as the coffee filter. We settled on a rectangle 12 inches long and 4 inches wide. Iron the cut piece of fabric in half and then fold over an edge on each side that will make the drawstring part possible.

Concentrate REAL hard and sew up each side stopping before the drawstring fold at the top. Do not sew over this part!

Cut off the corners at the bottom of the bag making sure to not cut into your stitch. Next iron down the side seams so they lay flat and then fold down the drawstring part you’ve left unsewn. Sew along the bottom edge. You will be left with a loop on either side that you can put your kitchen string through to seal it all up!

Measure out your coffee! For the 1L bottle, we used 2/3 cup of unground beans. If you like your coffee stringer add a little more.

Grind that coffee! The grinder is a little broken and requires a butter knife. Hopefully, yours doesn’t. The coffee should be on the course side of things.

Fill the drawstring bags and tie them up tight. You don’t want the grinds getting all in your coffee. Fill the jars with water and let it sit!

Leave this Cold Brew sitting for 12-24 hours. After 12 it was perfect to drink as is. If you wanted it more as a concentrated coffee leave it longer.

Hope you Enjoy
