DIY: Sparkly Socks

DIY: Sparkly Socks

When things are sparkly I tend to think they are just generally better than non-sparkly things. When I first saw sparkly socks I wanted them so badly. As with a lot of things in life, my love for them didn’t quite justify the price tag attached. Especially since I already had a bucket of socks. No exaggeration I keep my socks in a bucket. Long story short I just don’t want to use my time to sort socks, plus I like keeping things mismatched, so I just throw them all in a bucket. So the dream of sparkly socks got put on the backburner.

I went to my local thrift shop looking for more books (never mind that I already have a stack of books I need to read) Ended up looking for striped shirts, cause never enough right? When the thrift spirits smiled upon me! I won’t lie socks aren’t something I would normally buy at a thrift store but these were in perfect condition, and they were SPARKLY.  Plus they were less than $2.

Things got even better, right next to them was a second pair of turquoise sparkly socks. Okay not quite, they were a childs size pair of tights.  Luckily I have Naomi in my life who months earlier had told me how to turn tights into knee-length socks. I figured I could use the same principle to make these into a matching pair of socks. If not I only lost out on about $1.50 (THE TIGHTS WERE EVEN CHEAPER)

I used the first sparkly sock to measure out the second one. Of course, leaving extra room for a seam allowance. At first, I was thinking that I would need to sew in an elastic. Didn’t end up being needed because the fabric of the tights was stretchy enough.

Turn your sparkly sock inside out and flip down the top. In hindsight, it probably would have helped to use some of the pins I have in a big box to hold all this in place. Unsurprisingly I didn’t do that.

I used a zigzag stitch right on the edge of the fabric and sewed all the way around. I think if I do this again I would take the time to match my thread to my fabric. With the nature of this fabric, it isn’t too noticeable but I think it would make it just look that little bit more put together.

I didn’t want to backstitch too much just because my own sewing skills aren’t great and I was worried it would just look a little too sloppy. I just did a quick little backstitch after sewing all the way around the sparkly socks.

Pleased as punch with how these turned out. Now I can rock these out in the sunshine we are finally getting. Proud owner of two pairs of SPARKLY SOCKS!
