Apple Roses

Apple Roses

Do you know what’s better than a bouquet? A bouquet you can eat! Forego flowers for little delicious flaky pastry cinnamon apple rose goodness. I’ve seen these all over the place but I just assumed making apple roses was difficult so I never thought about trying. This Valentines Day I was feeling stumped for ideas and didn’t want to just do pink sugar cookies. Mostly because over the Christmas holiday it felt like I made 5,000. I’m just not ready to get back into that life. I suppose being sugar cookied out was a blessing in disguise otherwise I might never have tried making apple roses.

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 Large Apples
  • 2 Packages of Puff Pastry
  • 1/4 Cup White Sugar
  • 2-3 Tbsp Cinnamon
  • 2-3 Tbsp Butter
  • Splash of Lemon Juice
  • Flour for dusting

Of course, I forgot to include a bunch of things in this picture of ingredients. But I didn’t forget to preheat the oven at 350 degrees. Win some lose some I suppose.

Cut the apples in half and then into thin slices. If you have a mandolin it makes this step so much easier but it’s not necessary. As you slice you can cut out the core of the apple. Mix the lemon juice into some water and then cover the apple slices. Either microwave or simmer in a pot until the apple slices are soft and bendy. This way when you go to roll them they won’t snap.

Flour a working surface and roll out the puff pastry and cut into strips. The longer the strip the bigger the apple rose will be. I forgot that actually measuring out how long I made my puff pastry strips would be helpful. You’ll just have to experiment but don’t worry I believe in you!

Mix together the sugar and cinnamon.

Melt the butter and spread over the strips of puff pastry. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture all over. If you prefer your apple roses to be more apple and less sweet then go easy on the sugar mixture. I like to go overboard on the sugar and sprinkled accordingly.

Layer the apple slices on one side of the puff pastry with the apple sticking up over the edge of the pastry. If you want to get a little fancy you can add some texture to the apple roses by having some slices higher and lower up. Whichever way you layer them they are going to look pretty great. Fold up the lower half of the puff pastry so the apple slices are sandwiched in between.

Roll up the puff pastry slice. The pastry will expand so don’t roll it too tightly. You can use a little butter to join the apple rose together.

Once the apple roses are all rolled up place them in a greased muffin tin. When I make this again I think I will use paper baking cups instead of greasing the pan. Bake for around 40 minutes or until the middles look done.

Happy Valentines Day!
