2021 Goals

2021 Goals

I am a person who loves goals and challenges, but quiet ones. Does that make sense? Let me try and explain,  I like my New Years resolutions to be small changes that push me into being a better person. Don’t expect to see me training for a marathon or climbing mountains. It’s just not my thing. You might see me using a reusable water bottle every day instead of buying disposable. It’s an understatement to say that 2020 has been a garbage fire of a year, maybe that’s why I was so excited to think up new goals and resolutions for 2021. Now, I know there isn’t a magic roll over that happens at midnight this year that makes everything fine again. But I’m ready to leave 2020 behind me and have a new mindset. New Year New Goals!

I’m not really a fan of accountability with my goals as I just hate failure. But I think coming out of an absolutely insane and unpredictable year it’s time to roll with the punches. Goals aren’t a failure if you mess up it’s perfectly fine to mess up and then keep going. No need to make a fuss or feel bad. There is merit in persevering and not having it perfect the first time around. So I’m posting here to hold myself accountable to my 2021 goals! Not to shame me but to remind myself that it’s a marathon, not a sprint.. metaphorically of course.

FIRST 2021 GOAL

now clothes 2021

First up, my goal for 2021 is to not buy any new clothes! Living through a pandemic has shown me how much of a shopping addiction I have. I just impulse bought so many pieces I didn’t need or even want. I slapped clothes onto the sadness and grief of 2020 like a polyester bandaid. Here’s the kicker when I have tons and tons of clothing I don’t really end up wearing them. Everything is overflowing and messy and stresses me out just a little bit. It’s also incredibly wasteful. The impact of fast fashion on the environment and humankind is tragic to think on for any amount of time. Now, I am aware this is a complex issue that doesn’t really have a simple solution. Still, I can make a change for 2021 and redirect my energy and money into better things.

Now, there are a few exceptions that should be stated. I’m excluding socks, underwear and shoes from the no-buy ban. For what I hope are obvious reasons. Additionally, I can thrift clothes or sew my own clothes. The main purpose of this ban was to stop plentiful and mindless consumption of clothes. Thrifting gives me a less wasteful option in case there are specific things I need throughout the year. Sewing my own clothes adds thoughtful and quality pieces to my closet. I feel really excited about this. I’ve known for a while that the way I was currently buying clothes was making me really unhappy but couldn’t quite get around to doing anything about it. So, we’ll check back in 12 months and see how my 2021 goals went!

Second 2021 Goal

Going along with my no new clothes and riding the success of 2020’s Make Nine I’m doing it again! Choosing nine projects for 2021 was so much harder than I thought it would be. I knew I wanted to include a few sewing projects that would really challenge me but with enough easy ones mixed in to make sure I don’t just give up in frustration. As it stands here is my Make Nine 2021 plans!

Third 2021 Goal

grateful 2021

This is the last one I promise. As I said before, and as I’m sure you are aware, 2020 has been a difficult and painful year. There is no denying or downplaying that fact. Still, when I reflect back on the year there have been joyful and beautiful moments. Going into 2021 I want to be more aware and appreciative of the good things in my life. My word for 2021 is gratitude. I want to take notice and not pass over or forget the good. So each month in 2021 I want to make a Top Ten list of the best parts of each month. No matter how big or how small.

Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope 2021 is filled with magic and adventures. Wish me luck with my 2021 goals.

Hannah
