No Buy November

No Buy November

I am putting myself on a book-buying ban! (book BUYING ban NOT book ban because I don’t support those) Before I went to bed I sat staring at my TBR (to-be-read) stack of books and got really sad that they keep getting passed over for new books. I was also consumed with the thought of how good it would feel if I could get that stack lower or even… gone. I don’t feel guilty about the number of books in that stack however because I have been reading a heck ton of books this year. Buying books and reading books are some of my big joys in life. But, I bought all those books in my TBR pile for a reason and I want to challenge myself to rediscover them. Also, I could do with putting a pin in my book spending for a bit. Doing a modified No Buy November seems the perfect opportunity.

I know that some form of either ‘No Buy November’ or ‘No Spend November’ is a real established thing. I however have not been able to find an origin or any definitive setup. All the articles I’ve found say similar things. In essence, November is a great time to reevaluate our spending. November has Black Friday or Buy Nothing Day if you roll that way. It’s also the month leading up to Christmas when we start to buy lots of stuff for our holidays. It’s also almost the end of the year. I agree all these factors make November a great time to look at our spending habits and make some changes.

Some people go really intense and spend nothing other than bills. That means no groceries even! I am not ready to be that hardcore. So instead I’m foregoing the purchase of books. From what I can tell it is also acceptable to choose a non-essential area of spending in your own life and eliminate it for the month. That’s how I am planning on taking part in No Buy November.

November Reading List

There are honestly WAY too many books to do a detailed roundup, maybe I’ll recap my favourites once the month is over. But here is a basic list, please note I accept absolutely no judgement for the “embarrassing” picks on this list. I am a firm believer in reading whatever the heck makes you happy regardless of how others might want to shame you for it. Life reading nothing but Hemingway and Dickens would be boring AF and I’ll die on this hill.

Wish Me Luck

Stack of books has fallen over onto the ground.

While I am genuinely really excited to tackle my TBR and put a hold on the book buying I’m also really nervous! I love buying books so stopping is going to be tough. So wish me luck with this No Buy November. I think we can all see I have more than enough books to last me through November and beyond. Expect a round-up at the end of the month so we can both see how I did!

Are you taking part? Please let me know if you are, we can help hold each other accountable.

Also for the love of everything sacred DO NOT give me any recommendations until November is over. I have very little self-control when it comes to buying books and I do not need the temptation. However, once No Buy November is over PLEASE tell me them all!
